Chandler Woods Partnered with Area Hospital for Educational Program

Chandler Woods Charter Academy partnered with Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital to take part in their Back, Boost, Buckle Program, which teaches students and parents best practices regarding booster seat safety. The program educates families about traveling safely with children and improving booster seat use.

“We are so excited to bring this program to our community and share life-saving information with our children and parents,” said Georgiana Varlan, dean of lower elementary at Chandler Woods. “The safety of our students is so important to us. If even one parent is impacted, we are thrilled.”

The program began with an assembly for Chandler Woods’ students and their parents. This presentation featured two speakers, both injury prevention specialists, who shared information about the proper booster seat stages and seat types. According to the hospital, “Most children do not fit properly in an adult seatbelt without the use of a booster seat until they are between the ages of nine and 12 years old.”

“This is a passion of mine,” said Erin Baughn, injury prevention specialist at Spectrum Health. “I enjoy spreading the word. I want the entire community to be safe.”

Following the assembly, parents were invited to attend one-on-one sessions with the representatives to learn about which booster seat best suits their children.
