Students Rally Together to Support Classmate

Canton Charter Academy second-grade student Emi Weschky had quite the job in early December, she was named the 2014 Honoree of the Detroit Jingle Bell Run. Canton_Emi.JPG
The Detroit Jingle Bell Run is a family friendly, run/walk that raises money and awareness for arthritis. Emi, who suffers from juvenile arthritis, was selected to lead the event and kick-off the holiday season.

Emi’s mom informed Principal Janelle Maygar of this honor and Maygar decided it was a great opportunity for the middle school students to help out. Part of her prep for the event was to practice her public speaking. Canton middle school students interviewed Emi about arthritis and the run and showed the video at a school wide assembly. “After Emi’s mom informed me she had been selected, I thought it would be a wonderful chance for the whole school to get behind her with our support,” said Maygar. “Emi is a great student who shows perseverance every day and is an inspiration to all students and staff at Canton Charter Academy.”
The Canton National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) students took the job to heart and soon organized a school-wide fundraiser, assembly, and casual dress day. The students made jingle bell necklaces that they handed out to each student who donated $1 for a casual dress day. The NJHS students also invited Emi to help educate classmates on juvenile arthritis.

Together Canton Charter Academy students and staff raised $762, donated to the Arthritis Foundation.
“It was great to be the honoree,” said Emi. “I like being able to teach other kids and adults about arthritis.”
