Canton Charter Academy Student Gears Up for National Science Competition

Jaya Choudhary, eighth-grade student at Canton Charter Academy, is one of the top 10 finalists in the 2019 3M Young Scientist Challenge. This challenge is the nation’s premier science competition for fifth- through eighth-grade students.

After submitting a short video communicating the science behind a possible innovation to solve an everyday problem, Choudhary was selected over hundreds of others because of her science acumen, innovative thinking, and exceptional communication skills demonstrated.

“I honestly did not think I would be chosen to be a finalist,” said Choudhary. “I saw so many amazing innovations, and it was truly humbling to see what other kids created. When I got the call, I was so shocked and excited at the same time.”

Choudhary is competing for a $25,000 grand prize and the title of “America’s Top Young Scientist.” For her project, Choudhary engineered an Airflow Control Robot designed to help reduce energy consumption in the home by eliminating the use of heat in unoccupied rooms.

“3M’s leadership in applying science and innovation to make a real impact in the lives of communities across the globe is inspiring, and Discovery Education is proud to partner with the ‘3M Young Scientist Challenge’ to ignite a spark of STEM curiosity and wonder in kids,” said Lori McFarling, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Discovery Education. “Together, we hope to demonstrate for students that STEM can change the world.”

As a finalist, Choudhary is working one-on-one with Dr. Döne Demirgöz, 3M Insights Leader, as part of the mentorship program. Demirgöz’s role is to challenge Choudhary to bring her innovative concept to life. Choudhary meets with Demirgöz virtually, in which she provides guidance to help advance Choudhary’s innovation from a concept to a prototype – allowing for a complete experience in the scientific process.

The final event is set to take place Oct. 27-29, 2019 at 3M Headquarters. Follow Jaya Choudhary’s experience here.
