CCA Students Place First in World Championship

Four Canton Charter Academy students were honored with the People’s Choice Award and placed first in the 2018 World Championship Robotics Competition May 17-19, 2018 at Lawrence Technological University.

The team, named the TechSisters, is comprised of Pragya Choudhary, Jaya Choudhary, Riya Patchava, and Reva Patchava. This is the third consecutive year the team has competed at the world robotics championship.

The TechSisters’ 2017-18 project for the robotics competition was the Vulcan Fire Protection System – a fire safety system.

The project includes the robots: Arbor, Canary, and Ranger. Arbor, the first robot, detects flames, sprays a wall of mist, and notifies authorities there is  a fire. The mist helps prevent the spread of the fire and is installed on natural foliage near structures to save on costs and prevent eyesores.

Canary was invented to detect gas in industrial fires that may have toxic gases, such as butane and benzene. The robot uses gas sensors to determine which gases are present in the area and will alert firefighters with this data.

If a fire is too dangerous for firefighters to combat, Ranger the robot was invented. Ranger is an autonomous firefighting robot that pumps out a jet of water at the fire, extinguishing it. Ranger uses a Pixiecam to locate the flame and then is able to accurately aim the water.
