Burton Glen Charter Academy Encourages Parents to Keep the Learning Going During the Winter Break

Press Release

BURTON GLEN, Mich.,  Dec. 10, 2014—While student excitement builds toward winter break, Burton Glen Charter Academy’s principal is reminding parents about the importance of keeping children engaged in learning even during the holidays.
“Two weeks is a long time if students completely avoid reading and math activities,” said DeNesha Rawls-Smith, principal at Burton Glen Charter Academy. “We would like to see parents limit television time and encourage their children to devote a few hours a day to activities that stretch their minds.”
Rawls-Smith shared five fun ways parents can incorporate learning into all of the family fun during the holidays.  Winter break activities can include:
o   Reading for pleasure: Find your favorite holiday book and have your child read aloud for family members and friends. See how many books they can read during their winter break.
o   Make Cooking a Lesson: Have your child help make holiday treats for family, friends, or neighbors. Have them help with the measuring, baking time, and even attach a homemade card.
o   Write, Write, Write: `Tis the season to spread joy! Have your child write notes or cards and practice their spelling and handwriting.
o   Host a Game Night: Invite family, friends, or neighbors over for some friendly competition. Use reading, math, and problem solving skills during this evening of fun!
o   Make the Most of Car Rides: Have your child count cards, read street signs, or practice math facts with flashcards.
“If students engage in learning opportunities during the holiday break it will only help them as they re-enter the classroom in January,” Rawls-Smith said.
Burton Glen Charter Academy is a free public charter school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
