Buffalo United Charter School Goes Pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Students and staff members from Buffalo United Charter School recently joined forces to collect socks to donate to local breast cancer patients in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Throughout the month, students were encouraged to bring in warm, fuzzy socks with grips on the bottom to be donated to the Breast Cancer Center at Roswell Park, the nation’s first cancer center, located in Buffalo, New York.

“Go Pink for Breast Cancer shows a sense of awareness and it also instills a sense of family, community involvement, and helping others,” said Carolyn Alston, office administrator at Buffalo United Charter School.

During the day on Oct. 23, students also held a “pink out” day allowing them to set aside their daily uniforms and wear a pink shirt or breast cancer awareness shirt to commemorate the month. Students who dressed up were encouraged to donate one pair of socks.

Through the month of October, students also participated in classroom discussions regarding the importance of giving back to their community and recognizing Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Students continued organizing and counting the socks in preparation for delivery to patients at Roswell Park. The goal was to collect 100 pairs of socks, and the students surpassed their goal by collecting over 250 pairs at last count.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which takes place every October, is an annual campaign by the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. that aims to increase awareness of the disease.
