Apex Academy Hosts Building Better Readers Night

Apex Academy recently hosted a Building Better Readers Night community event that aimed to encourage students to develop a life-long passion for reading.

The event provided students and their families a chance to connect with teachers from local high schools and individuals from community organizations to learn about reading resources. Students enjoyed activities, including creating “make and take” crafts with a reading theme.

“This event is an evening of family fun to promote the resources available to our families that can assist them with academics at home,” said Billi Watson, admissions representative at Apex Academy.

East Cleveland Library was on-site throughout the event to register students for library cards, and Cleveland Kids Book Bank gave away one free book to every attendee. Fourth-grade students added a theatrical presentation to the evening by performing a special Readers Theater selection.

“Building Better Readers Night is important because it helps with the barriers that are sometimes found with continuing education outside of the school day,” said Watson. “Many of our parents aren't aware of the resources available to them or do not know how to assist their children with their homework, as things have greatly changed since they've been in school.”

The event also tied into the school’s Moral Focus curriculum, which encourages students to learn life virtues such as respect, integrity, perseverance, and courage. Throughout September, students focused on learning about wisdom.

Great work, Apex!
