AJB Decorates Doors for Black History Month

With hopes of creating reflections of African-American History Makers for their students to mirror, Andrew J. Brown Academy had a door decorating contest to kick-off Black History Month.

Most doors were decorated by teachers and students did participate on a few. Staff members voted for the winner based on creativity. Some of the featured themes included: Education for All, Introducing Historically Black Colleges and Universities, African Royalty, Black Girl Magic, Black Scientists Rock, Phenomenal Woman, and more.

“The idea was for teachers to create a design to inspire and capture their students' eyes so as they enter the classroom doors, they can think about the doors that they can now enter from the way that history makers paved,” said Candice Jackson, family liaison at Andrew J. Brown Academy.

Staff were motivated to have the best door and made a special effort to be original. On the doors, you can find history makers such as: Phillis Wheatley, Jackie Robinson, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Michelle Obama and more.

“Black History Month is important for our scholars because it shows them the potential that each of them possess,” said Jackson. “From humble beginnings, (some very similar to our students), these history makers made a difference and exemplified courage which is something we emphasize at AJB. We are all very grateful for the sacrifices made and we are happy to celebrate Black History Month with creativity and art.”
