Like a lot of educators, Ms. Nicole Graves pursued a career in education because she was inspired by her own experience – but it might not be the one you think. While her mother was a teacher, Ms. Graves did not love her school experience. “I never cared for school,” she admits, “but I loved working with children. I went into teaching in hopes of helping other children find their love for education.”
And it’s her love of kids that has shaped her whole philosophy. “I believe that all children are capable of great things when given the tools and resources they need. Learning should be fun and inspiring. With hands-on learning and engaging lessons, teachers can help instill a love for learning in all students.”
Ms. Graves began her career teaching kindergarten students for one year before moving up to second grade where she taught for seven years. During that time, she also mentored new teachers and helped develop curriculum. She then transitioned out of the classroom and into the role of curriculum coordinator for two schools who were becoming IB certified. Soon after, a local principal resigned, so she was placed into the open position for the remainder of the school year. In 2015, she joined Triumph Academy as the K-3 dean and remained K-3 until taking over the principal position in 2019.
According to Ms. Graves, “Triumph Academy is a family. From the day I walked through the doors as a parent to taking over as principal, I have experienced nothing but welcoming faces and a warm, caring environment. Our staff goes above and beyond to do what’s best for our students. I think the number of staff kids who attend Triumph speaks volumes. We have put our trust and faith in this school when it comes to our own kids. We want to make Triumph the best school in Monroe county.”
Ms. Graves has been married to her husband, Jeremy, for 11 years and has three children. They’re an “outdoor” family who enjoys the water, riding four-wheelers, spending time around a campfire, and traveling. They love to explore new places across the U.S. and have been to 27 states as a family so far.
