More than 37 students from South Arbor Charter Academy competed against nearly 2,500 other students from 40 different schools in Washtenaw County, June 3, at the 15th Annual Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO) at Pioneer High School.
“This was the seventh consecutive year for our school and our students had an amazing time at the competition,” said Kim Bondy, principal of South Arbor. “Twenty three of our students took home award medals this year!!
The competition tested students in 21 events ranging from water rockets to aerodynamics.
In the four months leading up the competition, the South Arbor students worked hard to learn many advanced and complex subjects, including: aerodynamics, barge-building, estimation, gravity and potential/kinetic energy, map-reading, human skeleton anatomy, ornithology, architecture, light and reflection/refraction, astronomy, gene biology, computer programming with Scratch, chemical reactions with powders and liquids, electrical circuits, and building a bridge made out of pasta.
Many parents served as coaches, event volunteers, and chaperones throughout the events.
The students were recognized at an assembly June 9 where they were allowed to wear their WESO shirts and show off their award medal.
