Third- through fifth-grade scholars at Pinnacle Academy recently took part in a service project to benefit those in need in their community. Inspired by Mother Teresa’s famous quote, “it's not how much we give, it’s how much love we put into giving,” the scholars set off to collect items to donate to a local women’s shelter.
Upon discovering that students in these grades wanted to be involved in an after-school program, the idea came to life.
“I've been teaching the scholars at Pinnacle Academy that they should be appreciative of the things they have; however, there are some people that struggle with having their basic needs met,” said Delena Flowers, achievement and behavioral specialist at Pinnacle.
There were 10 girls who participated in the project. The students collected personal hygiene items, including shampoo and conditioner, soap, toothpaste and toothbrushes, and deodorant, to name a few.
“They were excited to participate,” said Flowers. “They also wrote a few encouraging notes to add to the packages!”
Examples of these encouraging notes, which were placed inside each package included:
- “Be encouraged.”
- “You are beautiful.”
- “You are kind.”
The items are going to the City Mission in Cleveland, which serves women and children from the area who are living amongst the homeless population.
The group is set to participate in another service project this month in alignment with April’s Moral Focus virtue, compassion, and will partake in another project in May.
