Pembroke Academy Students Honor Black History Month

In honor of Black History Month, throughout February, students at Pembroke Academy are engaging with a “Who am I” themed bulletin board that encourages students to piece together clues about historical figures.

Each week, two different African American heroes are highlighted, and students are asked to guess who they are. The students are given visual clues to help identify who is being recognized on the board.

Each Monday throughout the month, the school will conduct a drawing from the guess boxes. If the student guesses the historic figure accurately, they will receive a prize. Prizes include intelligent robot pets, LED gloves, rave lights, and Force 1 Hands-Free Drones.

“The importance of learning about historical black figures ties into our Moral Focus virtue of the month, which is courage,” said Sesi. “The historical figures saw a need for change and faced many fears and struggles to have their voices heard.”

The individuals who are being featured during the first week are Sojourner Truth and William Edward Burghardt (W.E.B.) Dubois. They were chosen to make the lesson more challenging for scholars by selecting from lesser-known heroes, adding more historical figures into their knowledge base.

“It’s important for students to understand the changes that took place in the past to make the country better for all its citizens, and how things are continuing to change to better the country for the various citizens that are part of it,” said Sesi.
