Grand River Academy Students Win Golden Buzzer on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent”

On June 18, the Detroit Youth Concert Choir & Performing Arts Company (DYC) received the Golden Buzzer on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” from Terry Crews, a Flint, Mich. native. When an act receives the Golden Buzzer, they are sent straight to the live shows. The group performed an unexpected rendition of “Can’t Hold Us” by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.

Four of our very own Grand River Academy students are members of the DYC, Shyel White, Jae Abdul, Zionne McAdory, and Olivia Flood.

Following the performance, Crews took the stage and addressed choir director, Mr. Anthony White, “Mr. White, people like you are the reason I am where I am right now and, let me tell you, all it takes is one person to believe that you can do it and you have that and that's more than so many people have on this earth.”

Mr. White has directed the choir for 21 years. The DYC is a non- profit 501(c)3 organization that services young people throughout the Detroit Metropolitan area. The choir teaches and develops students through music education, dance, and theatrical arts.

The DYC is set to perform on, Aug. 27, and the results show will take place Aug. 28, both at 8 p.m. ET. At the end, only 22 acts will move on, including one wildcard.
