For the past eight years the young 5s class at Excel Charter Academy has traveled to SarahCare, an adult daycare facility for senior citizens, as a year-long project.
As part of their class service project, the students meet and interact with seniors that otherwise would not be able to socialize with children.
During the monthly visits the seniors help the young 5s color, make a craft, and play a game.
"The students bring cheer to those they are visiting,” said Dan Bartels, principal of Excel. “I’m grateful that they are able to encourage others!"
Before concluding each visit, the students sing two songs with the seniors.
By visiting with the seniors throughout the year, students live out one of their moral focus virtues – compassion.
