Books and s’mores, and guest readers, oh my!
Detroit Enterprise Academy has been celebrating National Reading Month through fun activities, like a visit from Cat in the Hat, guest readers, participating in One Book-One School, Trivia Tuesday, and Camp Read-Away.
Camp Read-Away kicked off last year as an opportunity for students to share in the love of reading in a fun way. This year, kindergarten- through fifth-grade students participated in the event.
“Instilling a love of reading in our students at a young age ensures that they connect reading to love and positivity,” said Emily Gagnon, dean of upper elementary at Detroit Enterprise. “The more kids read, the greater their vocabulary. The greater their vocabulary, the more successful they will be in school and life.”
At Camp Read-Away, students were able to take their picture in a photo booth, keep warm by the “fire,” listen to guest readers, and snack on some tasty s’mores trail mix.
Guest readers came in from across the Detroit community, including parents, students from Southeastern High School, and Officer Miller with the Detroit Police Department Bomb Squad. Miller also talked about her job and was excited to work on bringing a positive police presence to the students.
“When community members volunteer at our school, it shows the students that these individuals care for them and their well-being,” said Gagnon. “The volunteers enjoy spending time with our students and want them to be successful.”
