Providing a Better School Choice in Detroit
National Heritage Academies Celebrates National Charter Schools Week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 07, 2014—National Heritage Academies (NHA), a charter school management company, partners with seven Detroit schools to provide school choice to families searching for better academic results.

NHA serves just under 4,700 students in the city of Detroit, 96 percent of those students qualify for free and reduced lunch, compared to 82 percent for Detroit Public School (DPS). Despite the increased challenge, NHA Detroit schools are committed to helping their students achieve higher academic outcomes.

“Our teachers are provided the finest curricular resources and assessment tools to assist them in providing a high-quality education to all of our students in Detroit,” said President and CEO of National Heritage Academies Chip Hurlburt. “Along with providing rigorous academics, we also believe in establishing connections with students so they know they have a strong support system within their school.

As a group, NHA partner schools had a rate of growth of 125 percent, or the equivalent of a year and a quarter of growth in a single school year on a nationally-recognized assessment.

This above average growth has translated to gains on the Michigan Educational Assessment Program (MEAP), the state’s standardized test.

NHA Detroit schools outperformed Detroit Public Schools in 73 percent of all grade/subject categories tested on the MEAP and have an overall proficiency that is 9 percentage points higher than DPS.

“NHA schools provide a safe and structured environment that allows student to stay focused on learning and the results are amazing,” said Hurlburt. “We are proud to be investing in future leaders in this great city.”

National Heritage Academies is joining charter schools across the country in celebrating National Charter Schools week May 4 – 10. The week is designed to help raise awareness about how charter schools operate and the educational choice they provide parents. NHA students and staff will share their school pride with each other this week and reflect on the academic achievements met so far this year.

National Heritage Academies is a charter school management company operating 76 schools in nine states for the 2013-2014 school year. It is currently serving more than 50,000 students in grades kindergarten through eighth.
