National Heritage Academies Celebrates National Charter Schools Week

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich., May 05, 2014—Parents seeking school choice opportunities for their children applied to National Heritage Academies (NHA) in record numbers this year, leaving 20,952 students on a wait list. One of the nation’s largest charter school management companies, NHA operates 76 public charter schools in nine states.

When a school has more applications than there are open seats available, a random lottery is utilized to determine enrollment. After seats are filled, the lottery continues to draw positions for the wait list. If a child who was accepted to the school leaves for any reason, the student at the top of the wait list is offered a seat.

“We have experienced record numbers of applications and demand for our schools with wait lists of more than 2,000 students at some schools,” said President and CEO of National Heritage Academies Chip Hurlburt. “We appreciate the support we receive from parents who feel so strongly about the quality school choice NHA provides.”

The NHA school model offers kindergarten through eighth grade in one building with a heavy focus on academic excellence and college readiness. Teachers also incorporate a unique moral focus curriculum into every day lessons that are encouraged and practiced school-wide.

NHA opened two new schools this year: one in Michigan and one in North Carolina. It plans to open four more for the 2014-2015 school year in Michigan (1), North Carolina (1), and Louisiana (2).

“Our vision is to better educate more children and we will seek to fulfill that vision, in part, by opening new high-quality schools in hopes of offering additional spots for students,” said Hurlburt.

National Heritage Academies is joining charter schools across the country in celebrating National Charter Schools week May 4 – 10. The week is designed to help raise awareness about how charter schools operate and the educational choice they provide parents. NHA students and staff will share their school pride with each other this week and reflect on the academic achievements met so far this year.

National Heritage Academies is a charter school management company operating 76 schools in nine states for the 2013-2014 school year. It is currently serving more than 50,000 students in grades kindergarten through eighth.
