Moral Focus and our four pillars

National Heritage Academies schools offer a Moral Focus curriculum, part of the NHA four pillars, in which teachers incorporate a monthly virtue such as compassion, integrity, and respect into lesson plans to proactively promote good behavior. The Moral Focus curriculum is designed to support our parents’ efforts to teach character at home by reinforcing and modeling universal human virtues.
Values are fundamental to a great education and an integral part of our curriculum. We regularly hold a Moral Focus Assembly, where students are recognized as much for their character as they are for their accomplishments, where a simple display of gratitude, respect, or encouragement is cause for celebration.

What are the NHA four pillars?

NHA was founded on the four pillars of academic excellence, Moral Focus, parental partnership, and student responsibility. From the first school opening in 1995, NHA has implemented these values in and out of the classroom.

What is NHA’s commitment to academic excellence?

Academic excellence means that all principals, deans, and teachers are working to prepare students for high school, college, and beyond.
NHA makes a nine-year commitment to every child. It begins from day one, in kindergarten, setting the expectation that all students will be prepared to attend college.

How does NHA encourage parental partnership?

NHA recognizes that a student’s education begins in the home. All NHA schools strives to build strong connections between home and school.
We believe a parent-teacher-child partnership leads to greater success. NHA schools help foster a positive parent/teacher relationship by implementing the following:
  • Parents are always welcome. Principals and teachers make themselves available to discuss parent concerns.
  • Teachers provide frequent updates on academic progress.
  • Parents have online access to the school calendar, their child’s attendance record, academic updates, and grades.
  • Teachers send home weekly folders; the principal publishes a monthly newsletter; and the school uses an automated phone system to inform parents about school events and remind parents of important dates, like parent/teacher conferences.
  • Parents have the opportunity to provide us with feedback twice a year through our Voice of the Parent Survey.

How does NHA implement student responsibility?

NHA students are taught to act responsibly and to be accountable for their actions. This includes completing assignments, participating in classroom discussions, behaving in a respectful manner, and following the school’s rules and procedures. A "no excuses" mentality is stressed with students so they learn at a young age that strong character is developed through personal responsibility.

What is the Student Code of Conduct?

  • Respect and obey all staff members, adults, and those connected to the school.
  • Respect fellow students at all times.
  • Respect property of the school, fellow students, staff members, and area neighbors.
  • Use acceptable language at all times.
  • Cooperate in keeping the school building and premises neat and clean.
  • Demonstrate honesty, courtesy, and kindness in relationships with fellow students, staff members, and adults.
  • Obey all rules and regulations with respect to the safe and orderly operation of the school.
  • Observe the required school dress code policy as outlined.
  • Be punctual in attendance except in cases of illness, excused absence, or emergency.

Learning to be a good person—in or out of school—is as important as learning to be a good student.
