Boys and Girls Cross Country
Available to 5-8th grade boys and girls. It is offered in the spring. Students have meets where they run 2 miles and compete with other NHA schools in the area. Great opportunity to gain teamwork and personal motivation experience. The students learn the fundamentals of running on a team and setting goals to achieve.
Girls Cheerleading
Available to 5-8th grade girls. It runs from October-February. Students cheer at home basketball games. It is a great opportunity to be part of something at Walton. Students learn team work and cheerleading fundamentals.
ELL Rosetta Stone Language Learning Program
This program is offered to our ELL parents to strengthen their English language skills to increase parent involvement in the school and to decrease language barrier anxieties. The program is designed around parent schedules and may occur during the evening or during the school day.
ELL programs
There are various afterschool programs available to ELL students throughout the school year based on student achievement and test data. A summer learning program is also offered for selected ELL students as well.
Art Club
Available to 3rd through 8th grade students. Art club meets every Wednesday 3:30-4:30 in the art room. Third through fifth grade art club runs from October - January. Middle school art club runs from February-May. Students learn basic to intermediate art skills and techniques. Students experiment with numerous art tools and materials. Great opportunity for students who are passionate about art and want to enhance their skills.
Walton Academic Success Program
WASP is a targeted small group tutoring program we offer at Walton. Students are chosen based off of MAP and MEAP scores, as well as, teacher recommendation to participate. Students stay after school three days per week for an hour and a half per session, working 45 minutes in Reading and 45 minutes in Math. Groups are arranged in a 4 to 1, student to teacher ratio. Each student is given a binder that contains an individualized lesson plan for both Reading and Math. The purpose of this program is to provide students with individualized tutoring aimed at decreasing the achievement gap.
Math and Reading Scholars (MARS)
MARS is an after-school computer based program for students in grades 2-8. Students may sign up for one night a week to work on the educational website Study Island with a focus on either Math or Reading. Study Island is a website that allows students to work on grade level objectives that correspond with the Michigan Grade Level Expectations. Students receive incentives based on attendance during the program. Walton runs three sessions of MARS throughout the year.
