TIMBERLAND CHARTER ACADEMY REFLECTS ON
Students Collect Over $4,000 for Charitable Giving
6/7/2011
Page Content
As the school year comes to a close, faculty and staff at Timberland Charter Academy,
a tuition-free public charter school serving approximately 400 students in grades K-8
, are reflecting on the students’ many charitable efforts, invaluable lessons of philanthropy and the commitment to community developed in and outside of the classroom. These efforts aligned perfectly with the school’s ongoing commitment to moral focus.
Since
September, the Timberland Charter Academy school community has raised more than $4,000 in support of multiple organizations. Students, parents and staff have raised funds, collected food, and donated goods worth thousands of dollars that have been redistributed into the community to support many different organizations.
Over the past 10 months, students and staff collected $1,200 for a Gleaners food truck that provided meals for another 200 people in the community, and purchased coats, hats and mittens to help 45 kids endure Michigan’s brutal winter during a coat drive supported by the
Muskegon County Sherriff’s Department
. Earlier this year, Timberland’s ‘Read and Bleed’ blood drive resulted in the donation of nearly 30 units of blood for the
American Red Cross
. To celebrate all moms on Mother’s Day, the school recently joined the
TWO MEN AND A TRUCK
®
Movers for Moms
®
program in collecting more than 650 essential items for women staying at
Every Woman’s Place
, a Muskegon-area shelter assisting women and children in crisis.
Additionally, students collected over $2,700 in pennies for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society
, and on special occasions, were allowed to forgo the school uniform and wear jeans and a Timberland t-shirt for a small contribution for a special cause. Recipients of ‘jean day’ donations included the

cure for breast cancer fund and
Big Brothers Big Sisters
program.
