Spelling Bee Winners 2012

Ridge Park's 2012 Spelling Bee winners Abby Rodriguez and Jonathan Jernigan display their practice books for the upcoming Regional Competition.

It took 34 rounds to decide the 2012 Ridge Park Spelling Bee on January 20th.

Jonathan Jernigan and Abby Rodriguez battled for the school-wide winner going ten rounds head-to-head before Jonathan correctly spelled bizarre and bankrupt. Abby, the defending school champ, missed bizarre to open the door for Jonathan to win.

For the first-time, fourth graders were allowed to participate in the school-wide Spelling Bee and Jonathan validated Scripps Howard’s decision to include fourth graders. As a member of Mrs. Forrest’s class, Jonathan dethroned the defending champ and 8th grader in a Bee that could not be finished before the audience had to be dismissed at the end of the day.

Both Jonathan and Abby will represent Ridge Park at the Regional Spelling Bee, which will be held February 15 at East Elementary in Grandville.

Twenty-nine students competed in the annual event (see list below).

In case either Jonathan or Abby cannot compete at the Regional event, another 4th grader from Mrs. Forrest’s class Daniel Ha would compete.  Ha spelled 24 words before missing ‘literati’.
