Newbery Reading Contest 2012 Announced

Bret Mason and Dawn Elliott
It is that time of year when students are inside more than they are outside and instead of veg’ing out in front of the computer or TV we want to motivate them to read. The motivation for the Newbery Reading Contest is to encourage students to read the best literature and to be imaginative in finding Newbery Award winning books to read, take the AR Quizzes and accumulate the most points over a two month period. The contest starts January 17 and ends March 16.

Every year since 1922, the American Library Association selects a children’s book that was published that year and awards it the distinguished Newbery Award for the best children’s book as selected by American librarians. There are also four or five Honors Books selected each year that we also include in our contest. A list of the Newbery books is on the Student’s Launchpad under the Library icon.

This is the 4th year of the contest. The previous winners are Raqhelle Millbrooks (2009), Sela Washington (2010) and Mumina Abdiyow (2011).

We had 104 students participate in the contest last year and 1919.4 AR points were accumulated on the best children’s books in print.  The top 4 finishers garnered over 100 points just in the Newbery Contest.

This year, we are going to let our winner pick from a selection of prizes as opposed to having a grand prize that a student may already own. Among the prize choices are a PSP, a Kindle, a Nook, a DSI XL, a Nintendo 3DS, and an 8GB MP4/MP3/Digital Camera combo.

Our goal is to have 125 students participate and to eclipse 2000 AR Points.
