HAMTRAMCK ACADEMY RECEIVES FULL CHARTER RENEWAL
Hamtramck Academy, a tuition-free public charter school in Hamtramck operated by National Heritage Academies, recently received full-term charter renewal from Bay Mills Community College (BMCC). Hamtramck Academy, which ranked ninth among the 35 BMCC authorized schools, received an eight-year charter renewal, the maximum allowed by the community college.
“Hamtramck Academy has provided families in our community with a high quality education alternative since first openings its doors in 2003,” said Charlene Sloan, Board president. “The school’s commitment to developing students’ minds and hearts, through its dedication to student learning and moral focus, are key factors in its ongoing success. Bay Mills Community College’s support and confidence in Hamtramck Academy will allow the school to continue to have a positive impact on its students and our community for years to come.”
Hamtramck Academy offers a challenging, character-based education with high academic and social expectations. It prioritizes the academic program and instructional time so that students learn to read, compute and write at or above grade level. Students are expected to master the skills needed to prepare them for success in high school and college readiness.
“Hamtramck Academy is one example of how a public school could operate to maximize education for urban children,” said Dr. Patrick Shannon, CSO Director for BMCC. “Over 90% of the students attending Hamtramck Academy receive free and reduced lunch yet over 80% scored proficient in math and reading. Hamtramck Academy is a model to be replicated. Bay Mills Community College is pleased to approve a full eight year charter for the parents and students of Hamtramck Academy.”
