Dress Code

To enable students to reach high academic standards, we've put in place a dress code designed to reduce distractions and competitions. Implementing a simple, flexible, cost-effective dress code promotes student learning and increased academic instruction time.

  

All Students

  • Students in grades Young 5s-5 must wear white or light blue shirts with collars (includes mock turtleneck, long- or short-sleeved, cotton or knit).

  • Students in grades 6-8 must wear white, light blue, or navy shirts with collars (includes mock turtleneck, long- or short-sleeved, cotton or knit).

  • Shirts must stay tucked into pants.

  • Students are allowed to wear long-sleeved white or blue undershirts underneath their shortsleeved uniform shirts during cold weather.

  • Students must wear solid brown, black, navy, or burgundy shoes (loafer type or casual dress).

  • Athletic shoes may be worn on the designated gym day.

  • When students wear boots, the uniform pants must cover the entire boots. Students are not permitted to wear uniform pants inside the boots.

  • Belts must be worn with pants that have belt loops.

  • Cold weather attire may include solid navy, white, light blue sweaters or vests. Sweatshirts are not permitted.

  • Detroit Merit Academy Merit Pride shirts may be worn on Fridays.

  • Hats of any kind may not be worn inside the building.

  • Extreme hairstyles are not permitted. Hair color must be of natural tones and may not be professionally colored, dyed, or streaked.

  • Hybrid uniforms are not permitted. Students must wear the proper school uniform and the proper gym uniform. Students may not integrate the two.

  • Carrying, displaying, and wearing gang paraphernalia, names, signs, and symbols are prohibited.

 

Boys

  • Boys in grades Y5s-5 must wear navy or dark blue pants or shorts.

  • Boys in grades 6-8 must wear tan/khaki pants or shorts.

  • Socks must be worn.

  • Hairstyles must be conservative with hair kept off the collar.

  • Earrings and other body piercing ornaments are not permitted.

 

Girls

  • Girls in grades Y5s-5 must wear navy or dark blue pants, skirts, skorts, or jumpers.

  • Girls in grades 6-8 must wear tan/khaki pants, skorts, skirts or jumpers.

  • All bottoms must be longer than the fingertips when the arms hang at the student’s sides or no more than three inches above the knees.

  • All girls must wear socks or tights.

  • Boots may not reach higher than the bottoms of the calves.

  • A reasonable number of earrings are permitted. Earrings must be smaller than a quarter. Only ears may be pierced.

  • Makeup is not permitted.
