As the school year comes to a close, Brooklyn Dreams Charter School and Riverton Street Charter School, two new tuition-free public charter schools, have a lot to celebrate. Both schools each opened their doors in September 2010 to nearly 200 K-3 students and have exhibited tremendous academic success in their first year. Riverton students showed a 216.7 percent growth across all subjects – the national average for growth is 100 percent – and 87 percent of the youngsters met their growth goals. Brooklyn Dreams students achieved 137.5 percent growth across all subjects. Reading growth also was substantial with Riverton achieving 233 percent growth and Brooklyn Dreams with 150 percent. Additionally, Riverton had the highest student growth scores of any school managed by National Heritage Academies. This Wednesday, the schools will be celebrating their first year successes. Brooklyn Dreams students will be performing “At the Beginning” and Riverton students will be singing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.” In addition, Brooklyn Dreams will be dedicating the library in memory of William Girasole, former board member who passed away last year.
